The future of how we interact with our home and the systems within it is changing. The simple light switch and plug socket are fine, but the ability to control them from anywhere in the world as long as you can get an internet connection, is the future.
Sockets are easily retrofitted by either replacing them, or using plug in wifi adaptors. These are then set up to communicate with your home hub, Google home or Amazon Alexa. The light switches are a whole new issue, for a wifi light switch to communicate with the hub it requires power. Now, I know many will say it has power how else do my lights work? Yes it has a live feed to it, but in most cases that is all there is, no neutral, so nowhere for the current to flow. That said some light switches will have a neutral and for those without there are other options, like kinetic switches, or wifi units that can be wired in at the light fitting and still be controlled by the normal switch, as well as the smart home hub. Smart home light bulbs are also a solution, these do require everyone in the home getting used to not switching the light switch off as this cuts the power to the bulb and it will no longer be able to communicate with the hub, Google home or Amazon Alexa.
